Preface

Tangram puzzles have fascinated generations of children and today in the 21st century children find them just as absorbing as ever. Providing an enjoyable way of learning about shape and space, solving tangrams also enhances many skills that are essential in learning mathematics. The child enjoys the freedom and control s/he has with tangram problems. This book provides the structure that will guide and challenge the child and will enable the child to discover many important ideas about shape and space.

Conservation of area is a fundamental concept that is reinforced by use of tangram shapes. Other concepts that are helped include transformation, angles - acute, obtuse, right - perimeter, similarity, congruence and symmetry. At a more general level, problem solving strategies are developed. Many puzzles have more than one answer and the child finding his/her own solution feels a sense of achievement. Creativity and imagination are stimulated and spatial awareness is refined in solving tangram puzzles - at all levels from infants to adults.

The outline of each individual shape is given in the first few puzzles. From page 14 on, only the outline of the shape to be completed is given. An even greater challenge is provided from page 38 onwards as the outlines are drawn to reduced scale.

The solutions to all the puzzles are illustrated at the end of the book
